What is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding (also referred to as dental bonding or tooth bonding) is a cosmetic dentistry technique designed to improve the aesthetics of your smile. This non-invasive procedure involves the application of a tooth-coloured composite resin to the surface of your teeth.

The resin is then skillfully shaped and polished by our experienced dental professionals to correct imperfections, such as chips, cracks, gaps, and discoloration using a range of advanced techniques. One of the advantages of composite bonding is that it does not require the removal of any of your existing tooth structure.

In order to bond the resin material, it is applied directly onto the tooth and then crafted and shaped as we go. Often described by our patients as pain-free, the procedure requires no anaesthetic or drilling. All our dentists will do is polish the teeth, then gently add the special, strong resin material. To finish, we will use a high-grade polish to set and complete!

Composite Bonding FAQs

How long does composite bonding last?

When compared to veneers, composite bonding does not last as long. With the right care and attention, you should have no problem wearing them for at least 2-5 years. It is recommended to avoid hard foods and similar substances, which can impact or crack the composite material.

How much does composite bonding cost?

Prices for composite bonding can start from £350. When composite bonding is used to treat chips and cracks, this can be very worthwhile, whereas more severe cases may wish to consider composite veneers.A full smile analysis will be conducted, where we will create a composite mockup, adding resin to the teeth so patients can visualise what their finished composite bonding will look like, and decide on how many teeth should be treated. The mockup won’t be bonded to the teeth and will be removed before patients leave the practice.

Does composite bonding damage teeth?

No, composite bonding is a resin material which is adhered to/applied and sculpted directly onto the tooth.

Does composite bonding hurt?

Composite bonding is usually additive and does not require any tooth adjustment. This means no injections are needed and it’s pain-free.

Does composite bonding stain?

While composite bonding is resistant to staining compared to natural tooth enamel, it is not entirely stain-proof. The composite resin used in bonding procedures is designed to be resistant to common staining agents like coffee, tea, and red wine. However, over time, some staining or discolouration may occur, particularly if the patient consumes a lot of strongly pigmented foods and drinks or engages in habits like smoking.
