Can veneers stain? Full guide to protecting your veneers

18/10/2023

Veneers are a popular cosmetic dental treatment that can transform your smile and give you the confidence you’ve always wanted.

However, like natural teeth, veneers made in certain materials can be susceptible to staining over time. In this article, we’ll explore the question “Do veneers stain?” and provide you with valuable tips on maintaining the beauty and longevity of your veneers.

Can veneers become stained over time?

Yes, veneers can stain. Some materials are highly resistant to staining, while others can be prone to veneer staining, like discolouration. But it’s important to recognise that your lifestyle, oral hygiene, and exposure to high-staining substances can play a huge role in the longevity of your veneers.

Types of stains on veneers

Food and Beverages

Certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and dark berries, contain pigments that can gradually seep into the veneers, causing stained veneers.

Tobacco Use

Smoking or using tobacco products can lead to veneer staining. The tar and nicotine present in tobacco can leave stubborn stains on your veneers and affect their appearance.

Poor Oral Hygiene:

Neglecting proper oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing, can lead to the accumulation of plaque and tartar on your veneers, which can contribute to staining.

Can Porcelain veneers stain?

Porcelain veneers are highly resistant to stains compared to their composite counterpart and natural teeth! This is because porcelain veneers are non-porous, which helps fight stains, but it’s important to note that this does not make them immune.

Porcelain veneers can still get discoloured and stained from poor oral health and deterioration, like plaque build-up, and tooth decay, to veneer surface scratches and chips that allow food to affect the colour and look.

Can Composite veneers stain?

Composite veneers, just like natural teeth, can become discoloured over time, especially if they are exposed to certain substances.

Composite veneers can absorb pigments from food, beverages, and tobacco, which can cause them to become discoloured over time.

If your composite veneers do become discoloured, your dentist will be able to polish them or replace them. Composite veneers require more maintenance than porcelain veneers and usually look their best for around 3-5 years.

How do you prevent veneer stains?

To maintain and fight veneer stains, follow these tips:

Practise Good Oral Hygiene

Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste and floss daily to remove plaque and prevent staining.

Limit Staining Substances

Reduce your consumption of foods and drinks that are known to cause stains, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-coloured sauces. If you do consume these substances, rinse your mouth with water afterwards.

Quit Smoking

If you smoke, quitting not only improves your overall health but also helps preserve the appearance of your veneers by preventing tobacco stains.

Regular Dental Check-ups

Visit your cosmetic dentist for regular check-ups and professional cleanings to ensure that your veneers remain in excellent condition and any potential staining is addressed promptly.
