Do I need to choose a specialist dentist?

The short answer is, ideally yes! When you choose a specialist dentist for a complex treatment or a dentist who has a special interest for your Veneers you benefit from the experience and expertise they come with; for example, the Bespoke Smile clinical lead, Dr Sam Jethwa places over 1,000 veneers a year, and is an internationally recognised lecturer on the subject.

Why do I need to choose a specialist dentist?

Choosing a specialist dentist when getting any more complex dentistry is important, and for veneers a dentist who focuses on that work is important for several reasons:

Expertise and skill:

Specialist dentists have undergone additional years of training and education beyond dental school to specialise in specific dental procedures, such as surgery, periodontal, or endodontic treatment. A general or restorative dentist may have a special interest in veneers. They possess in-depth knowledge and expertise in aesthetic dentistry, making them well-versed in the latest techniques and advancements in the field. Dr Sam Jethwa even teaches his learnings at the Bespoke Smile Academy to other dentists around the world and is the founder of the world’s only diploma qualification in veneers.

Customised Treatment Planning:

Veneers require careful assessment, planning and customisation to suit each patient’s unique needs and goals. A specialist dentist will thoroughly assess your oral health, facial aesthetics, and dental condition to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored specifically to you. They consider factors such as tooth shape, colour, size, alignment, bite, and facial harmony to create natural-looking and long-lasting veneers designed to enhance your smile.

Aesthetic Vision:

A specialist dentist with expertise in cosmetic dentistry has a refined eye when it comes to aesthetics. They understand the principles of smile design and facial aesthetics, allowing them to create veneers that not only improve the appearance of your teeth but also harmonise with your overall facial features. They will take into account factors such as lip line, gum symmetry, and tooth proportion to ensure the final result is aesthetically pleasing and in line with your goals.

Advanced Techniques and Materials:

Specialist dentists stay up to date with the latest advancements in dental technology, techniques, and materials. They have access to state-of-the-art equipment and high-quality materials that enhance the longevity and natural appearance of your veneers.

Comprehensive Dental Care:

While veneers focus on enhancing the appearance of your teeth, it’s essential to consider the overall health of your oral cavity. A specialist dentist should evaluate your oral health before undertaking any procedures, and identify any underlying issues that need to be addressed before placing veneers. They can ensure that your teeth and gums are in optimal condition, which helps achieve the best results and avoids potential complications in the future.

We spoke to Dr Sam Jethwa about his recommendations for finding a Veneer special interest dentist or restorative specialist:

When choosing who you want to do your veneers, try to choose a dentist who is able to discuss and understand the outcome you want to achieve, and transform that into a reality. That way, your dentist can ensure the outcome they create matches the image you have in your mind, by communicating with you throughout the process. They need to ask questions like “do you have a preference in shape, have you thought of translucency, would you like to incorporate textures?” Once the dentist has an understanding of the look you desire, it’s up to them to turn this into a reality.

Katy’s Veneer story

When Katy came to see us her main goals were to have a brighter, enhanced, wider smile. She felt her smile was quite narrow and she wanted to show more teeth. After having a full health and smile-enhancing consultation with Dr Sam Jethwa, Katy decided she wanted eight upper veneers. She returned to us for her handmaid Trial Smile where she had her top eight veneers hand sculpted and shaped to perfection.

Once we revealed to Katy her new smile she was extremely happy. She loved the shapes we were able to create and the colour of her new teeth; plus the way the light was reflecting off her teeth meant we were able to create new angles that were not previously there. But Katy felt that although the eight veneers made her smile look wider, she was now considering adding an extra veneer on both sides. Dr Sam encouraged Katy to go home with the hand sculpted Trial Smile and live with them for a week before making any rash decisions. Katy then went away for a week and came back on the day of her trial smile review a week later.

Dr Sam asked Katy when she arrived at the appointment what her thoughts were. She said she didn’t want to change anything about the veneers that were fitted and absolutely loves the design and that they felt great in her bite; but she had decided that she definitely wanted to add an extra veneer to each side to widen her smile more.

Dr Sam was able to add a little bit of composite to each tooth, either side at the back to show Katy what this would look like. Katy confirmed that this made all the difference for her and she wanted to add the two extra veneers. Dr Sam was then able to remove the composite resin he had added and take an impression, and gave instructions to the lab to make the extra two veneers. Katy left this appointment feeling excited for her final veneer fit in the coming weeks!

Katy then came back a couple of weeks later once the lab had returned her veneers. We showed Katy her veneers and she could not believe how real they looked! We then removed the temporary veneers and placed her final permanent, porcelain veneers. We showed Katy what these looked like one final time before fitting and she was in absolute awe.

Once she confirmed she was happy, we fitted the veneers and handed Katy the mirror, where she then became quite emotional seeing her final veneers because she couldn’t believe they were her new teeth! She said changing her smile was something she had been thinking about over the years but never expected the final outcome to look as good as they did.

Katy said without the Trial Smile stage she would not have been able to see the difference between having eight or ten veneers fitted, and she was extremely grateful she was able to get that comparison through this process. She loved the design of her smile and said the final porcelain veneers looked so natural.

Together Dr Sam and Katy were able to achieve the desired outcome and the hand sculpted Trial Smile was an essential part of the process to get there. Katy said she will be smiling from ear to ear confidently and cannot wait to get captured in a photo laughing with her new smile!
