Dental crowns, often referred to as a tooth crown or teeth caps, are one of the most common and versatile dental restorations. They are used to restore damaged, weakened, or aesthetically imperfect teeth, helping to protect the natural tooth while improving its appearance and function.
If you’ve ever wondered what a tooth crown is, how it works, or what to consider before getting one, this guide explains everything you need to know, including the benefits, disadvantages, and differences between crowns and other restorations.

What is a tooth crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a tooth entirely, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, metal, or a combination of these. They are designed to mimic the natural look of your teeth while providing durability and protection.
Crowns are used in situations such as:
- Protecting a weak tooth from breaking
- Restoring a broken or worn-down tooth
- Supporting a tooth with a large filling or root canal treatment
- Covering a dental implant
- Improving the appearance of discoloured or misshapen teeth
Tooth cap vs crown
There is no difference between the two terms, but many people use the terms “teeth caps” and “dental crowns” interchangeably. Essentially, a tooth cap is another name for a crown.
Advantages of dental crowns
Crowns offer multiple benefits, including:
- Strengthening a damaged or weakened tooth
- Restoring the tooth’s shape, size, and bite
- Improving the overall appearance of your smile
- Protecting teeth after root canal treatment
- Longevity: With proper care, crowns can last many years
Disadvantages of dental crowns
While dental crowns are highly effective, there are a few considerations:
- Some tooth preparation is required, although we have a minimal approach at Bespoke Smile, it may involve removing a portion of the natural tooth
- Cost can be higher than fillings
- A crown may cause sensitivity immediately after placement, which usually resolves quickly

When might you need a crown?
You may need a dental crown if you have:
- Severe decay that cannot be restored with a filling alone
- A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth
- A tooth that has had root canal treatment and needs additional protection
- Cosmetic concerns such as discolouration or misshapen teeth
What to expect during crown placement at Bespoke Smile
- Consultation and examination: The dentist evaluates the tooth, access your bite and chewing habits and takes X-rays if needed.
- Tooth preparation: The tooth is shaped to allow the crown to fit properly.
- Impression or scan: A mould or digital scan is taken as part of the records.
- Temporary crown: A temporary crown made by your dentist in a temporary resin material will be placed while the permanent crown is made.
- Crown placement: The permanent crown is made by hand by our master ceramist, fitted, adjusted, and bonded in place.
