“Very mindful, very modest, very cutesy.”
We live in a world where internet trends change by the day; from the Espresso dance challenge to Brat summer. The latest trend to take the internet by storm is from TikToker Jools Lebron; so if everyone in your life right now is saying “very demure, very mindful” then don’t worry, we’re about to uncover exactly what that means, and how it can actually apply to the world of cosmetic dentistry and achieving a demure smile.
What is ‘very demure very mindful’?
If you’ve been online recently, you’ve probably been wondering “What is the demure trend?” as it’s been everywhere! It seems like everyone on our feeds is declaring their coffees, outfits, and errands to be “very demure, very mindful.” But what is it, and where did it come from?
The trend began with American content creator Jools Lebron posted a satirical TikTok video at the start of August 2024, demonstrating how to be “demure and modest” at work.
“You see how I do my makeup for work? Very demure, very mindful,” she says in the video. “I don’t show up with a green cut crease.”
Because of this viral TikTok, currently at nearly 40M views, people around the world have expanded the definition of “demure” by putting it in entirely new, everyday contexts like making a sandwich, or popping to the shops.
What does demure mean?
“Demure” describes a person (often a woman) who is reserved, modest, or shy in their behaviour or appearance. Someone who’s demure might have a quiet, modest demeanour, often characterised by a restrained or polite attitude.
For example, if a person has a demure smile, it might mean it’s subtle and not overly expressive. The term can also indicate someone who is deliberately modest or plays down their appearance or personality in a way that is considered socially appropriate or attractive.
Moving away from the world of TikTok and over to cosmetic dentistry, Bespoke Smile clinical lead and President-Elect of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr Sam Jethwa has claimed that 90% of his patients come to see him at Bespoke Smile because they want their cosmetic dental work to look natural and subtle. Enter, The Demure Smile.
What is The Demure Smile?
When we spoke to Dr Sam Jethwa about exactly what a demure smile means, he explained,
“People no longer want the large, bright white smile, known previously as the Hollywood Smile. Nowadays, people want their cosmetic dentistry to be subtle, natural and more importantly, individual.
This is a really exciting time for cosmetic dentistry because the technology is now available where smiles can be “perfect” whilst being completely bespoke to that patient.
So with a demure smile, we can keep people guessing. People can appreciate a beautiful smile, but are left not knowing exactly what work they’ve had done, if any at all.”
The best treatments to achieve the demure smile:
Achieving a demure smile, characterised by its subtlety and understated elegance, can elevate your natural beauty and confidence. But what are the best treatments to help you achieve that perfectly poised smile?
Feather Veneers
Dr Jethwa’s hand-crafted Feather Veneers are not only in high demand but also completely synonymous with his approach to dentistry; bespoke, hand-crafted and underpinned with an artistic flair that simply cannot be replicated.
Feather veneers are wafer-thin, porcelain shells, individually designed and made by highly trained artistic ceramicists. They’re then gently bonded to the front of the tooth to change its colour, shape, size or length, with next to no adjustment of the tooth itself.
Dr Jethwa explains, “Many people assume that to have veneers the patient’s teeth need to be drilled down, transforming them into small pegs. This is just not the case, this treatment is minimally invasive and can really transform a smile.”
The perfect Pantone
Although there was once a time when a bright white smile was at the top of everyone’s wish list, the trend has now changed and people are moving towards a more natural, healthier shade of pantone for their teeth.
Dr Jethwa says, “The colour of your teeth is incredibly unique to you and in whitening, it is important to ensure you whiten to ‘the right white’ for you. A real tooth does not have a ‘cold’, snow white – instead, it is an off-white and has ‘warm’ tones running throughout it. My advice is that the shade of white should always match the whites of your eyes.”
Micro-sculpting
Micro-sculpting uses a micro layer of resin which is gently sculpted to the tooth.
“Micro-sculpting improves the appearance of teeth without drilling or filing the teeth down,” explains Dr Jethwa.
“It involves using a micro layer of resin which is gently sculpted to the tooth. The resin is carefully tailored to match the colour and even texture of your tooth. The tooth is then cleaned and the resin is applied to a specific area, for example, a chipped tooth, or gaps in between teeth. In some cases, it is applied to the whole tooth. The resin, which is a bit like putty, is carefully moulded to the correct shape before being exposed to a UV light which cures and sets the resin.”
Uniquely at Bespoke Smile, Dr Jethwa layers the resin by hand with translucent tints to mimic real teeth and then uses a strict secret polishing protocol to give them as much shine as possible.
Smile symmetries
When it comes to a balanced smile, Dr Sam explains, “Designing a smile for the face, working with its asymmetries, and using them to produce something beautiful is the basis of everything we do in cosmetic dentistry. We consider all the facial features; aspects as detailed as like whether the eyes sit on the same line as each other.
In unfortunate cases, often where patients have travelled abroad for cut-price dentistry work, the veneers or crowns appear too large. This can cause the smile to appear too big for the person’s face, and may cause complications and discomfort.”
In the world of the internet where trends shift from hour to hour, the “very demure, very mindful” trend is the latest to captivate the internet. While this trend started as satirical it has found unexpected resonance in the world of cosmetic dentistry, where subtlety and natural beauty are now prized over overt perfection.
