Dental Veneers: Guide to Types

Although people are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of having veneers, there remains some confusion as to what different types are actually out there.

Whether you are looking to target dental or cosmetic issues including squint, misshapen, discoloured, chipped or cracked teeth – veneers target multiple issues in a short time frame.

However, there are several different types available, ranging from high-end permanent solutions such as porcelain veneers to temporary solutions such as the trial smile or snap-on veneers.

Variety of the types we offer and their associated benefits:

Porcelain:

  • Porcelain is generally the most popular and most effective material used when manufacturing veneers.
  • Porcelain veneers are resistant to staining and provide a perfect treatment method for discolouration, chips and cracks.
  • Although they are often the most expensive option, the investment is worthwhile when it leaves you with your dream smile.
  • At Bespoke Smile we offer hand-designed porcelain veneers suited to meet your needs. Each veneer will be custom-tailored to fit each individual tooth.
  • During your consultation meetings, you will have the opportunity to inform your dentist about your specific desires regarding shape, size and colour.

Temporary (trial smile)

  • Temporary veneers include ‘trial smiles,’ an appliance that allows you to visualise how your final smile will look after the veneers are fitted. Completely unique to our practice, we handcraft our veneers to look exactly as the patient requests.
  • This can be a temporary stage before having your veneers permanently fitted, and means you can offer feedback on the aesthetic and functional aspect of the smile.

Lumineers

  • Lumineers require less preparation and dental work than traditional porcelain veneers.
  • You may also hear them referred to as “no-prep” veneers, and they are made from an ultra-thin material and are slightly more translucent than traditional porcelain veneers.
  • For this reason, they are a less favourable option for people looking to target extremely discoloured teeth.

Ultra-Thin Veneers

  • Crafted using ultra-thin porcelain, this option is a popular choice amongst patients because it requires minimal teeth preparation.
  • Since the material is so thin, dentists can get away with removing very little enamel and tooth tissue.
  • As with most of our procedures, this is a skilled procedure and needs to be carried out by a highly-skilled dentist or clinician.

Emax Veneers

  • These veneers are created using highly durable porcelain.
  • Emax veneers are bonded to the front surface of the teeth and they are fitted without the need for tooth etching like more traditional dental veneers.
  • Again, this option involves minimal preparation.

Laminate Veneers

  • Dental laminates offer the same function as traditional veneers, and the two terms are often used interchangeably.
  • The difference with laminates is that they are much thinner and less enamel has to be removed in order for them to be placed.

Composite Veneers

  • Whereas porcelain veneers are custom made of porcelain to fit your teeth, composite veneers are manufactured using a tooth-coloured resin, the material that is also used with tooth bonding.
  • Composite veneers are a more affordable option, however, porcelain veneers are more durable and long-lasting.

Will they look natural?

If done correctly – veneers provide an extremely natural finish.

It is vital, however, that veneers are made with a highly-skilled pair of hands.

This may be the dentist’s hands who is making the composite veneers (also known as bonding) or the master ceramic technician’s hands who is making the porcelain veneer.

The skill, technique and experience of the dentist or technician is the most important factor in making the veneers look natural.

However, this is also dependent on the patient’s aesthetic choice.

Some patients desire a more cosmetic appearance, e.g. a completely straight, symmetrical, pearl-white smile.

This is why we place so much importance on the communication between patient and dentist prior to and during the treatment.

How do I know which type is right for me?

When it comes to deciding which veneers are most suitable for you, we take a case-specific approach.

Veneers are a versatile treatment option and we believe that the most suitable veneers for you will be dependent on your specific needs, teeth and facial structure.

The easiest way to decipher what style, material, size and colour works best for you is to organise an appointment with one of our dentists to examine your teeth and jaw function.

After this initial appointment, we can plan a design for you allowing you to suggest any changes if you are not fully happy with the suggested look.
