The Veneers Process Explained

10/10/2023

A captivating smile can illuminate a room, exude confidence, and leave a lasting impression on others. Genetics, oral hygiene, and dental care play significant roles in achieving dental perfection, but some people may require additional assistance to transform their smiles. This is where the veneers process comes into play.

Veneers have become a popular cosmetic dentistry solution for those seeking a radiant smile. Renowned for their transformative effects, veneers have revolutionised the way people approach smile enhancement. However, the process may seem mysterious and unfamiliar to many. What exactly are veneers, and how do they work? In this article, we will delve into the secrets behind this cosmetic dental procedure, exploring its purpose, benefits, and the step-by-step process involved.

It’s also important to note that veneers are not a solely cosmetic procedure.

They can help strengthen teeth that already have some slight decay and they can target a number of other dental issues such as misalignment, gaps and under or oversized teeth.

Let’s explore the veneers process and discover the path to a more confident, radiant you!

The Veneers Process

When you embark on the veneers journey, there will be a number of steps you’ll go through as part of the process to crafting your new smile:

Step 1: Initial consultation

First, you’ll need an assessment to discuss your concerns and what improvements you are hoping to achieve. The dentist should perform a full mouth and facial profile assessment, looking at the health of your teeth, gums, and bite. This will allow the dentist to explain what they are able to improve about your smile, whilst considering what’s achievable aesthetically, and also taking your bite into consideration.

Step 2: Health assessment

Once you and the dentist have a clear image of the aesthetic goals you’d like to achieve, they would then need to confirm if any other health treatment is required before taking the next steps.

It is crucial when getting veneers that the foundation is strong, whether that is down to the health of your gums or your teeth, you would not want to begin veneer treatment if the foundation is not solid! If you don’t invest time and care into the right foundations, you may end up reducing the lifespan of your veneers. For example, your dentist may recommend periodontal treatment to improve the quality of gums before the veneers are placed.

Step 3: Sculpting your temporary veneers

Once you have a healthy, stable foundation your dentist will be able to begin the Smile Sculpting element of the process, and build your Trial Smile. This involves creating temporary veneers out of resin which gives you the opportunity to test the look and feel of your veneers, before committing to them 100%. You can then feedback your thoughts to us after a week or so of wearing them, and adjustments can be made if necessary.

Creating and fitting the temporary veneers usually takes up to five hours and is finished in one appointment. This stage is crucial as it allows you to get used to your veneers, and make sure you are 100% happy with them before committing to the final, permanent veneers. We recommend our patients are in their Trial Smile temporary veneers for at least a week.

Step 4: Listening to feedback

Once you’ve lived with your temporary veneers, you’ll be invited back in so we can assess how you feel about your temporary Trial Smile, make any changes you’d like made, and then begin the process of hand sculpting your final, permanent veneers.

Usually this process takes about 3 weeks as the dentist and technician will work together custom designing and hand crafting each veneer. Once the veneers are ready, you’ll be invited back to the practice and each veneer will be fitted. We’re able to do this in just one appointment, and patients will typically return regularly to check up on their smile and have routine maintenance visits.
