Gum Pigment Reduction
Last medically reviewed by Dr Sam Jethwa: February 17, 2021
Do you have dark or black gums? Patients and individuals with darker skin often have a higher level of pigment in their gums, this can also be due to genetics, which is not something to be overly concerned about.
Gums can be dark and still be perfectly healthy.
However, the overall image may cause some patients to feel self-conscious and seek out cosmetic treatments to remove the pigmentation from their gums.

Make gums pink again
Pinks gums with an even gum line can improve your appearance and give the impression of healthy and clean gums.
Our gums can reveal a lot about underlying oral health conditions, for example, red swollen gums can point to gingivitis and even periodontal disease.
This is where bacteria begin to eat away at your gums, causing them to recede and pull away from teeth.
Meeting with a dentist will mean you can be provided with a full evaluation and the prescribed treatment to get your gums back in a healthy condition, or to make them appear pinker.
How do you get rid of pigmentation on gums?
Very similar to laser skin resurfacing, the gum depigmentation actively destroys the top layer of cells on the gum, when these cells are effectively destroyed, pink, healthy gums are restored.
Patients wanting the classic pink look can rest assured that gums can be safely lightened very easily.
The gum depigmentation treatment can last more than 20 years.
Patients who are unable to qualify immediately for this procedure include those with oral disease and non-surface pigment problems like periodontitis.
The treatment process:
Laser Gum Depigmentation vaporises a very thin layer from the top of the gum tissue.
This destroys the cells that produce melanin, and during the period of healing a new tissue is created that is pinker in colour rather than brown.
Recovery times are short and discomfort is manageable!
Depending on how you want your gums and smile to look, to achieve the right degree of lightning, several sessions may be required.
How long does the treatment take?
This cosmetic procedure is simple, fast and reported as pain-free.
Taking only around 20-45 minutes, a local anaesthetic will be administered to make the procedure feel as comfortable as possible.
