What are implants?

Implant treatments include single implants, multiple implants and All-on-Four/All-on-Six (teeth in a day).

They are long-term, durable solutions to reinstate individual or multiple missing teeth.

An experienced corrective dentist will implant them straight into your jawbone, so an adequate and healthy amount of jaw bone will be required.

However, it’s often a fact that those who have had missing teeth for a long period or have been wearing loose and uncomfortable dentures usually lose essential bone structure.

This is a result of untreated and ignored gaps and will require a bone graft or regeneration surgery to ensure the implant will be stable and secure.

Alternative methods in restorative dentistry to restore missing teeth include full or partial dentures and bridges, which use artificial teeth that fix on to either side of existing teeth.

Nevertheless, we have seen implants become the popular choice as alternative treatments like bridges may involve cutting of the original tooth to implement them.

How do they work?

free digital consultationsEither upholding crowns or dentures, an implant is inserted into the jawbone, which acts as a strong artificial tooth root.

Once it has been implanted the encircling bone will then fuse to it, keeping the implant securely in position.

After the period of osseointegration (where the implant heals over and fuses over a few months), a false crown (tooth or denture will then be applied to the abutment, which will be crafted to blend perfectly with existing teeth.

Consultations are an important step for implant installations because not every patient is a viable candidate. Having them installed will uniquely depend on your oral state, for example, the condition of your teeth and gums.

Possible unfit candidates are:

  • Smokers
  • Diabetics
  • Sufferers from gum or periodontal disease

Each situation is different so discussing your options with an expert implantologist will be crucial.

Dr Pano can advise you on everything you need to know prior to treatment as he specialises in gum treatments which make unfit mouths healthy enough for placements.

Painless procedures

Your dental implant will usually be placed over two separate appointments unless opting for the teeth in a day procedure.

The first appointment will fix the implant into your jaw and then a few months later, the second appointment will involve the new tooth being attached.

The surgery will be conducted at our dental surgery under local anaesthesia. Patients report mild discomfort with some slight soreness around the gum area, which will disappear after a few days.

Anxious patients can be given sedatives to help them unwind and continue with treatment.
